Awwwww I don’t think I’ve read anything exactly like this, but there’s always The Soul Piece where Cas is all about Dean even in heaven. Also The Request kind of has heaven bring them together.
First of all, THANK YOU! :3 And to answer your request, Damn Straight, Tripping, and The Law of Conservation of Energy I think deal with Dean exploring those things! Really, a lot of fanfiction has that theme of Dean having to come to terms with his sexuality because he’s portrayed uber hetero on the show.

The only one I know of is this one: Hunters of the Dark Side. It’s Gen, but the sequel The Fulcrum of the Force & Raveling Tendrils has Dean/Castiel. I haven’t read it, so I don’t know how good it is!
I haven’t read it because I’m not into Dean/Castiel/Balthazar, but there’s A Drop in the Ocean, A Change in the Weather. There’s also this WIP Making it Count.

I’m not sure I know what you mean by nesting! There’s Bower where Castiel has some birdish habits, and The Incredible Tale of Dean Winchester and the Angel Who Fell from the Sky. Nests are involved.

Okay, so the thing is I’m pretty sure most of you folks joined The Good Ship Dean/Cas kinda late in the game (except Heathyr, fist-bump for Heathyr).
Which is good, which is awesome.
I am a more-the-merrier type. I don’t care how you came to this fandom or how you found this ship, whether you watched SPN from the beginning like me or downloaded it (probably illegally) two weeks ago. All shippers are welcome here.
But.
In the beginning there were not that many people writing for this ship, but those that did were fucking quality. And while I’m sure a lot of early fic still gets passed around, let’s face it, years have passed and I’m sure a lot of it now gets missed on rec lists due to the constant (and awesome) evolution of fandom.
So I’m gonna rec some oldies-but-goodies. Some of them aren’t canon-compatible with stuff that has happened since the good old days (SEASON 4 COME BACK BABY, YOU CAN BLAME IT ALL ON ME!), but they are all worth a look.
WHAT WHAT WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH YOUR LIFE IF YOU HAVNE’T READ THESE FICS:
- Asunder- So for a while I was very anti-AU fic, I just didn’t get the point of it, until I read Asunder and completely fell in love. It was a WIP when I first read it, and it killed me until it was finally finished. Basically Dean (a social worker) brings Cas (a pediatric surgeon) to his estranged brother Sam’s wedding. It’s a m a z i n g. Just read it.
- Peanut Butter Pumpkin Wedding Cake- The second AU I ever read. A really awesome story where Dean meets Cas at what he thinks is Cas and Anna’s combined bachelor/bachelorette party…It’s amazing and I love it.
- The Request- Classic cloudyjenn. An AU where humans get responses and help from the angels they pray to, and Sam prays for an angel to find his brother Dean’s soulmate…cue Cas showing up with awkward black wings and overabundance of enthusiasm for his very first assignment…

- Make the Man- The ultimate Dean Smith/Castiel fic. So, so fucking good.
- In Real Life- Short, but adorable. Basically Dean and Cas are internet friends…

- Serpent and Staff- One morning Castiel wakes up in Jimmy Novak’s bed, in Jimmy Novak’s life…
- Angel Strain- A library, demons and fire (NC-17, read the warnings)
- The Girlfriend Experience- While it’s not like Dean hasn’t had a couple of truly regrettable hit-and-runs in his sexual history, this is probably the saddest fucking thing that’s happened to him.
